A Message From The Chairman: I am happy that you are considering the Department of Anesthesiology of St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center for your residency training. When you visit, you will be impressed by our residents’ enthusiasm and satisfaction; you will find that they enjoy training here. When we recruit new residents, we not only look for individuals with an excellent educational background, but also with well-developed social skills. We believe that a congenial atmosphere is critical to our educational mission; you will learn better if you like your training environment. Resident education is a central mission of our department. We have structured the department and its operations around this essential objective. To facilitate adjustment to the operating room environment, new residents work with the same attending anesthesiologist for a period of one to two months. This attending will also be the resident’s faculty mentor for the remainder of the academic year. The faculty mentor is responsible for helping you develop your study program and for regularly providing input on your performance to the Department’s Education Committee. You will receive frequent feedback on your progress and the didactic program is continuously fine-tuned to better meet your needs. Our residents’ excellent performance in the examinations of the American Board of Anesthesiology confirms that you will receive an excellent education here. When you join our program, you will also join the medical staff of one of New York’s best medical institutions. With its 2 divisions, St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center serves one of Manhattan’s most exciting neighborhoods, the Upper West Side. At St. Luke’s you will be on the main campus of Columbia University and will have access to all of its outstanding facilities. Roosevelt Hospital is located next to Lincoln Center and Central Park, and within a few blocks of all the Broadway theaters. Both offer amazing opportunities to enjoy the stimulating environment of this great city. I look forward to your visit and the opportunity to meet with you. Best wishes, Daniel M. Thys, MD Chairman, Anesthesiology St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center Professor, Department of Anesthesiology College of Physicians and Surgeons Columbia University |
