New York City The city that never sleeps has plenty to offer for everyone, no matter where you call home. It is a major international travel hub and is only a 5-6 hour flight to Europe. If you’re a sports fan, there are two baseball teams, two basketball teams, two football teams, and three hockey teams in the NYC area, all within easy reach by public transit. The arts and culture can’t be beat, with world class art galleries, symphonies, opera and ballet companies. There are zillions of restaurants, bars and clubs to have a good meal and socialize in, and of course endless takeout options for those nights you want to eat in. Sitting in the middle of it all is Central Park, an urban oasis where you can play softball, take a rowboat ride, rollerblade around the miles of pathways, or just lie on the grass and read the Sunday New York Times. Housing It’s no secret that apartments in NYC can be a pain…in other words, expensive and small. Lucky for you, St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center owns three buildings of apartments that they make available to residents and reasonable rates. Effectively making your ‘commute’ about 30 seconds, these bright and cheery apartments are a huge bonus, and make socializing with your colleagues fun and easy. Compensation and Benefits As a resident at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, you are entitled to a full package of benefits, including student privileges at Columbia University. The standard package includes: individual and family health insurance, vision care and dental coverage, and accidental death and disability insurance. Residents are entitled to four weeks of annual paid vacation as well as at least one paid conference during the residency. The need for anesthesia services never stops, so all residents participate in on-call duties. While the call “schedule varies according to each rotation, all remain in strict compliance with the New York State Public “Health Law, Part 405. Of course, after working the night on call, you are relieved first thing in the morning and have the rest of the day off. All residents are part of the CIR union, who among other things set the pay schedule. For 2006/07, it is as follows:
