St. Luke’s-Roosevelt is a world-class center for regional anesthesia, and is one of only twenty programs in the United States and Canada to have a dedicated regional anesthesia fellowship. The program is 12 months in duration and is primarily aimed at graduating anesthesia residents that already have a solid technical skill base, and who plan to pursue careers in academic medicine.

Fellows receive clinical training in both neurostimulation and ultrasonography, and at the completion of the fellowship will have mastered both of these techniques for a wide variety of peripheral nerve blocks, including:
  • Interscalene block
  • Supraclavicular block
  • Infraclavicular block
  • Axillary block
  • Lumbar plexus block
  • Femoral nerve block
  • Sciatic nerve blocks (including popliteal)
Other regional techniques that our fellows become experts at include thoracic paravertebral blockade, wrist and ankle blocks, as well as neuraxial blocks. Clinical research is a strong focus of the program and fellows have ample protected academic time to take part in various studies and other research projects that are continually being generated by the Regional Anesthesia division. Fellows typically present abstracts and posters at both Spring and Fall meetings of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia (ASRA), as well as various other conferences. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in lecturing and leading workshops at the annual NYSORA meeting held each December.
